This year, many people are spending more time at home than they might have before. When you spend so much time in your home, any problems or concerns you have about the safety of your house often become glaring issues. If you want to take steps to keep your residence - and the people who live there with you - safe, one easy way is to maintain these three systems.
1. Fire Alarms
A fire in your home can cause damage far beyond what any intruder could manage. If you want to keep your house safe, you'll need to ensure that your fire alarms are up to date. You'll have to test them regularly and replace parts - either the batteries that provide power or the unit itself, depending on the power source of your detector.
To test your detectors, look for the test button on the unit and press it to sound the alarm. You should check the power at least once a month. Keep an eye on the indicator light attached to the detector if you think the batteries have gone out between checkups. On average, you should replace your batteries twice a year rather than waiting for the power source to die completely.
2. Burglar Alarms
The company that installs and monitors your alarm system should keep an eye on it for you, but you can also keep an eye on problems from the keypad in your home. The easiest and most common problem is an open zone, or somewhere that the alarm system registers as triggered even when nothing has happened. You can take a step or two on your own before calling in your company to check it for you.
When you check for open zones, go through each of your openings attached to the alarm system, whether you use them regularly or not. Open each door and window several inches and close it again firmly. Look at your keypad again and see if you've fixed your fault zone. If you can't solve the issue this way, you may want to call the company that monitors your house and have them check it for you.
3. Security Cameras
If you have a camera system to monitor the outside of your home, you'll be responsible for physical maintenance to make sure that it performs correctly. Twice a year, you should go through each camera in the circuit and make sure they run as they should. Every aspect you check regularly could be the key to detecting a problem in time.
On your inspections, check the lenses for spots or smudges and the connections for corrosion or dust. If you've noticed any blind spots or sprouting bushes that block your camera's vision, adjust the position, and trim whatever might be in the way. If an outside company monitors your cameras, call them if you notice any broken pieces or poor-quality parts that need replacement.
Maintaining the safety of your household shouldn't have to be a stressful process. By performing these checks just a few times a year, you can keep up with the three basic systems that monitor your home. That way, you'll be able to sit back and relax, knowing that your security is up to date and your residence is as safe as you can make it.
