In addition to an overall alarm system, you as a homeowner can take simple steps to deny entrance to intruders, and to let would-be burglars know your home isn't an easy target. Since windows and doors are the most common ways a burglar intrudes, adding security in these vulnerable spots is a smart move.
Here are a few quick and easy steps to add security to your doors and windows.
1. Audit Your Deadbolts
The deadbolt on your door can provide a higher level of security than just the doorknob latch. However, some deadbolts are much better than others. Be sure to analyze yours by checking reviews and independent tests. For example, tests by Consumer Reports can help identify some deadbolt products that can protect against drilling or attempts to kick down the door.
Changing out a deadbolt is likely to be a manageable DIY project. Or you can have a locksmith or security contractor complete the work to ensure professional results in an even quicker time frame.
2. Choose Window Security Screens
Typical window screens are often made of a thin nylon mesh. Thin nylon mesh doesn't typically deter robbers much; they may slit the screen or simply lift it out of the window. However, security screens for your home are designed with a tough mesh of metal that an intruder or vandal will find much more difficult to cut or remove.
Security screens look similar to normal window screens. They can even perform the same functions as typical screens such as mosquito protection. And yet, with a metal screen firmly secured in your home's window, a burglar will have much more trouble getting in.
Some security screens also offer to protect against children falling out of windows, which is another way they help keep your family safe.
Be sure to look for a security screen that comes with an extra-strong frame and secure attachment so burglars can't simply uninstall the screen or bend back a corner of the frame.
3. Add Security Film on French Doors and Windows
Window films can often increase privacy, block glare, and even help keep your home more energy-efficient by blocking different types of light. However, you can also find window films that will actually increase your home's security by making would-be intruders work harder to break through glass.
These special security films work because they add a tough, non-shatter layer to your glass. When securely attached to the window or French door, this film can hold the layer of glass in place even when it's been smashed into tiny shards. Be sure to use a film with adhesive cling as these hold on to shards better than static cling products do.
Although a well-equipped intruder may still be able to cut open the plastic layer, it's more difficult to do when the plastic is covered in glass shards. Therefore, the intruder won't be able to get in as quickly, which will leave more time for police to arrive. The added layer of difficulty may also deter all but the most determined burglars from further attempts to break in.
When upgrading your home for security, don't forget to consider fire safety as well. Windows that are difficult to break into may also be difficult to break out of. So make sure you and your family have safe and easy ways to escape through any security window screens and films from inside the home in case of fire, and don't forget to install a fire alarm system as well.
Coastal Burglar Alarm can provide fire alarm systems, but we can also help you analyze your home for security risks and install a burglar alarm system as well. For more information on any of the services we provide to both homeowners and businesses, give us a call today.
